This illustrates that the NZ flag is no stranger to change. In fact in the past we have been forced to make changes to the flag to differentiate our ships from those of other colonies.

Some rather terrible examples of ideas for our new flag. We are known for sheep, bungy jumping, the kiwi bird and lord of the rings. but we are also known for meat and dairy exports,

The peoples choice award in here is quite different to the peoples choice award below. This one has a very modern feel. it seems more like art then a traditional flag. it incorporates both Maori and European history in a modern way. it reminds me of the Maori legendary figures Rangi the sky and Papa the earth embracing. but it also keeps the southern cross, the only part of our current flag which is truly ours. the koru in this image can easily be perceived as an unfurling silver fern frond because of its colour and shape, therefore it makes it kiwi not exclusively Maori. This could be a flag that unites us as a nation.

This site has a lot of information that ties in with the points in the News Talk ZB interview with John Key.

 Top Contender in this poll

Even John Key has come to favour this design.

My preferred variation on this top contender

Silver fern

It seems a silver fern is likely to be featured on a new flag according to this poll. This could be a good key symbol for the poster.

The Silver fern is used on many internationally recognizably NZ brands, including our passport! This would mean we would have to use a different variation of it for the flag, but there are so many variations you can make to it. The silver fern is even already available as an unofficial flag as well as on many other products.

Public opinion on John Keys new top contender for the an alternative flag
http://thedailyblog.co.nz/2014/12/19/say-yay-not-nay-to-this-new-zealand-flag/

This site has some good points against changing the flag.
- social changes need to happen before we can consider changing the flag. like being a republic.
- is it an attempt to distance us from our history?
- the money could be better spent elsewhere

Flag Cost
http://m.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11350245

26 million dollars! and because the process is already started with the referendums and the flag design submissions nearly complete, that money is already spent. even if we end up keeping the current flag!

Got Milk Ads

These ads all use sports stars and superheros to portray the ihi that if you want to be strong like these guys you need to drink milk. All the people in the images have milk moustaches so you dont even need to read the text to understand that these people drink milk to make themselves strong. the rhetorical device used in this is ethos, by using famously strong characters and muscly sports people.

Animal Farm Covers

Phrases

"Don't put the cart before the horse."

Pay attention to what's most important. Don't let things which aren't as important take up all of your time and attention.

"Don't throw out the baby with the bath water."

When you're trying to get rid of something bad, you might accidentally get rid of the good things that are connected with it as well. Don't do that.

"Every cloud has a silver lining."

When something bad happens to you, don't get too upset. There's usually something good associated with any bad experience. For example, if you get fired from your job, it might push you to get a better job instead.

"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem."

Don't just complain about problems that you see. Do something to solve the problems.

"It's no use crying over spilled milk."

If you break something, lose money, etc., don't get too upset about it. It's already happened, so getting upset isn't useful.

"Knowledge is power."

You should try to learn a lot. Knowing more things makes you more powerful.

"Look before you leap."

Make decisions carefully. Don't make a decision without thinking about it and researching it carefully.

"Strike while the iron is hot."

When you have a good opportunity, go for it. Don't wait for too long.

A Blessing In Disguise:
Something good that isn't recognized at first.

Down To The Wire:
Something that ends at the last minute or last few seconds.

Eighty Six:
A certain item is no longer available. Or this idiom can also mean, to throw away.

The Ball Is In Your Court:
It is your decision this time.

trying to get some ideas of how to successfully portray my unique and slightly complex argument that the money is already spent whether we get a new flag or not. the referendum is the big cost. there is no point going on that the money could be used for better things, because its gone either way so we may as well get something out of the 26 million dollars. some of these apply to the other argument i am considering of its a once in a life time opportunity that we should no waste just because key wants it and he is not the most popular right now.

More Research into Costing of the Flag change

Taxpayers face $25 million bill even if old flag stays

Changing New Zealand's flag is likely to cost the taxpayer $30 million or more, with Finance Minister Bill English acknowledging he doesn't know what the final total will be.
Just the buildup to the votes on the flag - and the referendums themselves - will cost $25.7 million.

John Key defends cost of flag referendums

"In the end you have to say, what price do you put on democracy where people can genuinely have their say on a matter that is actually important? ... This is a cost essentially of one of the values that New Zealanders would want to test.
